Attorney General Dave Sunday Criticized for Prioritizing NFL Crackdown Over Consumer Issues

Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday finally made some noise. The headline? Fake NFL merch in Pittsburgh’s Strip District. That’s it. That’s the big move.

Counterfeit goods are illegal. No one’s arguing that. But it’s fair to ask how this became a priority worth highlighting, especially when most voters would be hard-pressed to say what Sunday actually stands for. He’s been one of the quieter attorneys general in recent memory. That can work, if there’s a clear track record behind it. Right now, that’s not what’s breaking through.

Instead, it’s a crackdown on knockoff jerseys.

Critics are asking a simple question. In a city dealing with real consumer issues and broader economic challenges, is this really the best use of the office’s attention? The Attorney General has wide authority to go after scams, fraud, and abuses that hit people where it hurts.

When one of the most visible actions is a merch bust, it doesn’t exactly clarify priorities. It muddies them. It leaves voters guessing about what the office is actually focused on, and whether bigger issues are getting the same level of attention.

If this is what’s being put front and center, it’s fair to ask why. And more importantly, what isn’t.
